“Are you okay?

“I don’t know how to answer that right now. It was weird having someone standing in front of me showing me pictures of things I can’t remember. What was worse was the fact that my gut kept telling me not to trust him.”

“I had the same feeling. You’re not crazy. If you don’t feel comfortable going to my house, I can get you a room.”

“If you don’t mind, I’d like to stay with you. I don’t want to be alone right now.”

“I don’t mind. My parents are waiting outside to take me back to my truck. I hope you don’t mind riding in a snowplow.”

“I don’t mind.”

When we made it to the front door, they were waiting for us. I opened the car door for December. “Hey, Mama. Hey, Dad.”

“He son. All y’all okay?” my mama asked.

“I am.”

“How about you, young lady?” my dad asked.

“I’m sore, but I’m still here by the grace of God. I can’t complain.”

“Good to hear,” my dad smiled.

“What is your name, baby?” my mom asked.

“December.”

“That’s pretty.”

“Thank you. I’m sorry for intruding on your holiday,” she mumbled.

“You’re not intruding. This is what the Christmas season is about. Helping one another.”

“Dad, can you take me to my truck? We’re going to take it back to my house.”

“She doesn’t want to ride in that truck,” my mom said.

“It’s fine,” December giggled.

“See mama. Why are you up in here hating?”

“I guess. If that’s what you want to call it. Are y’all coming over for Christmas Eve later? I know y’all are probably tired after the long morning y’all had.”

“If she’s up to it.”

“I’d love to come.”

“It’s just us three. It’d be nice to have a guest over for the holidays. You’re more than welcome,” my dad said.

I knew what they were thinking. They were on me to find someone to settle down with instead of working all the time. I haven’t found a woman that kept my attention. It only takes one time for you to give your all to someone and they break your heart. After that, you’re really cool on dating. You don’t trust anyone and the risk of having to put yourself back together again is not worth it.

December solemnly stared out the window while my parents made conversation. She accepted my hand when I reached for hers. I just wanted to console her. I just kept imagining how alone and scared she must’ve felt. She woke up after the crash, not remembering the life she had, or what someone she loved possibly had to do with it.

“December, I know you’ve been through a lot, but you’re more than welcome to join us for Christmas Eve tomorrow. I wasn’t just being nice when I said it earlier.”

“I’d like that. I explained to North that I don’t want to be alone right now. I’m so confused.”

“I can only imagine,” my dad empathized. “If it’s any consolation, I’ve dealt with people who’ve suffered from amnesia. There’s no definite time when your memory will come back, but trust that it will.
