âAre you okay?
âI donât know how to answer that right now. It was weird having someone standing in front of me showing me pictures of things I canât remember. What was worse was the fact that my gut kept telling me not to trust him.â
âI had the same feeling. Youâre not crazy. If you donât feel comfortable going to my house, I can get you a room.â
âIf you donât mind, Iâd like to stay with you. I donât want to be alone right now.â
âI donât mind. My parents are waiting outside to take me back to my truck. I hope you donât mind riding in a snowplow.â
âI donât mind.â
When we made it to the front door, they were waiting for us. I opened the car door for December. âHey, Mama. Hey, Dad.â
âHe son. All yâall okay?â my mama asked.
âI am.â
âHow about you, young lady?â my dad asked.
âIâm sore, but Iâm still here by the grace of God. I canât complain.â
âGood to hear,â my dad smiled.
âWhat is your name, baby?â my mom asked.
âDecember.â
âThatâs pretty.â
âThank you. Iâm sorry for intruding on your holiday,â she mumbled.
âYouâre not intruding. This is what the Christmas season is about. Helping one another.â
âDad, can you take me to my truck? Weâre going to take it back to my house.â
âShe doesnât want to ride in that truck,â my mom said.
âItâs fine,â December giggled.
âSee mama. Why are you up in here hating?â
âI guess. If thatâs what you want to call it. Are yâall coming over for Christmas Eve later? I know yâall are probably tired after the long morning yâall had.â
âIf sheâs up to it.â
âIâd love to come.â
âItâs just us three. Itâd be nice to have a guest over for the holidays. Youâre more than welcome,â my dad said.
I knew what they were thinking. They were on me to find someone to settle down with instead of working all the time. I havenât found a woman that kept my attention. It only takes one time for you to give your all to someone and they break your heart. After that, youâre really cool on dating. You donât trust anyone and the risk of having to put yourself back together again is not worth it.
December solemnly stared out the window while my parents made conversation. She accepted my hand when I reached for hers. I just wanted to console her. I just kept imagining how alone and scared she mustâve felt. She woke up after the crash, not remembering the life she had, or what someone she loved possibly had to do with it.
âDecember, I know youâve been through a lot, but youâre more than welcome to join us for Christmas Eve tomorrow. I wasnât just being nice when I said it earlier.â
âIâd like that. I explained to North that I donât want to be alone right now. Iâm so confused.â
âI can only imagine,â my dad empathized. âIf itâs any consolation, Iâve dealt with people whoâve suffered from amnesia. Thereâs no definite time when your memory will come back, but trust that it will.
