Chapter Four

SAINT

“What are you over there thinking about?” My mama asked me. We had just got to my sister’s house from me picking her up from the airport. I had offered her to stay with me since I was the only one in my house. She declined, because she wanted to spend as much time with her grandchildren as possible, being that she hardly gets to see them now that we moved to Winter Crest.

I moved out here because I got offered to be the president of Winter Crest General Hospital. They were offering me more money than what I was making in California, even though I was making a gwap there as well.

I also have a bunch of real estate on the side. I was straight out of Crenshaw, but I knew that I wanted better for myself after doing a short bid in juvenile detention. The mentor that I had in there showed me that there was more to life than gang banging.

I was already a smart nigga, I just put more focus on my schoolwork once I was released. Then my sister got pregnant with my nephew, and I knew that I had to set a good example for him. His daddy already wasn’t shit, so he didn’t need two no good as niggas in his life.

Becoming a doctor was not in my plans, but after watching my best friend get killed right in front of me, that changed my path. I felt helpless when I couldn’t do anything for him. I felt as if I had some medical training, I could have done something for him. At that time, I was in my sophomore year of college, with an undecided major. I was home for winter break, and we were just spending time together in the hood, when a shootout broke out between two local gangs. The bullet wasn’t even for Keith, but a bullet doesn’t have any eyes. Most of the time the innocent person is always the one that is hurt.

There were so many bullets flying, and nobody was even trying to help him, because they were running for cover. In the middle of all the chaos, all I could think of doing was call for some help, because I didn’t know what else to do. The emergency operator tried to tell me how to stop the bleeding, but in reality, I already knew that my friend was gone.

A small tear dropped from my eyes as I thought back to that day. I never saw anything wrong with a man that cries. It is called being human. Yes, I knew that I had a few years on A’Mya, but she is mature for her age. If she doesn’t have a problem with it, then I don’t either. “I started off thinking about the young lady I was telling you about.”

“You're not thinking about her anymore? I see your wet face over there.” She got up from her seat and placed her hand on my back.
