Chapter Six

LAYLA MICHAELS

“I can’t believe it’s a week until Christmas and I’m doing this last minute shopping. I don’t know how I allowed time to get away from me like this.” I mentioned to Mrs. Dottie as we browsed the toy store.

“Looks like my grandson has been keeping you plenty forgetful, which could be the reason your days have been mixed up.” she responded.

“Mrs. Dottie...” I said with a blush.

“Don’t Mrs. Dottie me. I know the look of a woman who’s being properly loved on. Hell Xyon’s tone has changed too, and I wasn’t born all those years ago to not know you have something to do with that. It’s about damn time if ya ask me.”

She was right. Both Xyon and I had changed- in a good way- over the past few days. After the best sex I think I’ve ever had in my adult life, we decided to see if we could actually be more than friends. Xyon was worried that I would wake up one morning and change my mind like I did when we were teenagers, but I honestly had no intentions of doing so. It took me all these years to realize that Xyon was the man I needed all along. Knowing that now, I was determined to be all in.

“It’s all new to me. I never thought that Xyon and I would be in this position. I have always been adamant that he and I were better off as friends. I think it’s why I stayed with Kenneth so long too. I didn’t want to admit to myself that I wasn’t in love with him, but his presences had me temporarily forgetting about the feelings I had for Xyon.”

“Child, when it comes to true love, nothing makes you forget those feelings. You and him always had a ‘more than friends’ bond. Since you were little, your grandmother and I talked all the time about how you two were going to end up together. Xyon’s little ass was way too protective of you from the very first time he met you. At first, we joked that he was like the big brother you needed and it became borderline funny the way he would be about you.

Do you remember that one Christmas, he gifted you a small handmade charm bracelet? The one with the charms made out anything he could find in my house, ha ha.”

I nodded at the memory.

“Well, you didn’t realize it then, but that is when he stamped yo tail. On one of those things, he wrote ‘Xyon and Layla forever’ on it. I thought it was the sweetest thing ever.”

Hearing that made me smile, because I did in fact remember that bracelet. I even saw the words she mentioned. “I remember that. I also remember when I asked him what it meant, he told me it meant he would always be my best friend. I had no idea that it meant something deeper at the time.”

“Child, ain’t no little boy gon’ tell you straight out he likes you.
