“What does that mean?” Owen demanded shakily, snapping back to the present. He didn’t like to think of those times. Henry seized the paper from the floor and flipped it open to the correct page before shoving it in his friend’s face.

“Take a look at your handiwork!” Henry spat. Owen stared at the paper, taking it carefully in his hands. He re-read the title of the article again, just to make sure he was not going mad. It stayed the same. THE DUKE OF LENNOX CAUGHT IN SECRET LIAISON WITH MISS LINFIELD. Underneath it, Owen saw a familiar text printed out. It was one of the old notes Althea had asked him to deliver to her colonel. Henry had copied it out in a different handwriting to avoid suspicion falling on Althea and sent it via a servant at their mutual club. He had meant to burn the original. Yet there it was, printed for all the world to see. And there, at the bottom of the article, was the conclusion the author of the scurrilous article had drawn from the events. Without a name given at the top of the note, and since it had clearly been taken from his person, perhaps stolen by whoever had been dogging his footsteps for so many weeks, there was no possibility he could deny it had come from him.
