Chapter Six
The weekend was fast approaching, and Devin could barely contain his excitement. To celebrate their two month anniversary, he and Justin were going to go away for a couple of days. He'd given up a weekend at the club and taken the Monday off. Justin had changed his rota to ensure he was off from Saturday to Tuesday.
Things were working so well that Devin was giving serious reconsideration to moving. The only thing that stood in his way... He groaned softly at the alert from his cell phone. The tone identified the texter as his mother. Devin picked it up and ran his finger across the screen, his heart sinking. There was only one reason his mother would contact him. She wanted something. He glanced at the message.
Call me.
He stared at it, willing the words to vanish, but they remained there. Silently mocking him. Ignoring his shaking hands he hit speed dial.
"Hello, Mother. You wanted me to call."
"I need you to take me to Edward's tomorrow."
"I can't. I told you I wasn't going to be here this weekend. I'm going away with a friend."
"What kind of friend do you have that would stop you caring for your own mother?"
"Look. Let me call Edward. I'm sure we can work something out. Perhaps you could stay over and he could bring you home Sunday?"
"Edward's busy, and you can't expect him to put himself out like that. He has a family to take care of. Anyway, I don't want to stay. I want to visit. Surely you aren't going to put some friend above your own mother? It's not as though I ask for much from you."
"Mother, I made arrangements. I told you I had. I can take you if we leave early, butâ"
"So this friend is more important that your own mother. I know now you have no love in your heart for me."
"That's not true. Of course I love you. Look, maybe I can make a few changes to my trip."
"Call me when it's sorted."
Devin couldn't believe he was going to make Justin change their plans. His mother did it to him every time. He wouldn't be able to enjoy the weekend away if he didn't take her. His guilt would eat him alive and ruin his time with Justin.
He could only hope his lover would understand. They'd still have all of Sunday and Monday. He rubbed at his eyes. He couldn't call right then. He needed to be in control of his own emotions first. Not only that but Justin was at work. He pressed the heels of his hands against his eyes. Justin had jiggled his roster to get the three days.
Devin spent his night tossing and turning. He finally got up at 5:00 A.M. There was little point staying in bed any longer He hugged his tea mug and stared at his cell phone. He couldn't call Justin before midday. Justin would go home and sleep until lunchtime.
Barely able to focus at work from a mixture of tiredness and growing apprehension, Devin took refuge in his car to call Justin.
