Later in the semester, she wrote again, “Laura please write to Mayo [another ‘W’ friend] and learn something we can gossip about. Nobody here does anything to gossip about. Except Art classes: Nude, Drunks. The professor puts his arms around you to criticize your picture” and then “I got the funniest letter from Prophet [also a friend from the ‘W’] today—four pages of alterations between ‘Oh damn, Oh Hell, Oh Lord, etc.’ and ‘Went out with a poet, actor, and dancer last night + stayed till 2:30—he’s all one man’—and ‘Gee Dory I’m lonesome, please write often.’” More news and chatter about old times and friends followed before Welty closed, “Write soon [with four underlines] Do I sound crazy?”(29 Oct. 1927). In a letter postmarked 30 January 1928, she tried out her French on Laura: “Il est Sunday avec la prospect de noeuf (9?) days in which je will avoir nil faire and other French expressions of Eudora Lost in the Wilderness. Help help. Ecrivez-moi quelque chose et beaucoup et P.D.Q.” In each of the six letters saved by Laura Collins, Welty used a variety of handwriting and languages, adding drawings and photographs, writing in margins and on the envelopes. In an undated letter, she said for Laura to tell Isabel that she said,

Lección treinta y neuve El subjuntivo después de Verbos de Mandato, Permisso, u Prohibición. She ought to know that if she’s gonna be married n’est-ce pas? Also tell her
