Chapter Eleven

Frustration worse than anything Robert had ever experience pulsed through him at Kelsey’s anguish-filled words. As much as he wanted to rail against the man and accuse him of being immature and defeatist, he could see precisely where Kelsey was coming from. It could very well seem as though he’d targeted Kelsey in order to use him to achieve June’s goals. Someone like Kelsey—who had never had a shred of affection or support in his life, particularly not from the people who should have loved him—would see Robert’s actions as manipulation and not the deep-seated love that it was.

He loved Kelsey. The love had been there for weeks, slowly budding and blossoming out of the soil of lust and infatuation, but he could see his emotions for what they truly were now. He loved the broken, fragile, and yet astoundingly strong and independent man Kelsey was. He loved the man that Kelsey didn’t see himself to be, or that he could become.

“You will not walk away from me,” he said in a voice that was loud enough to draw attention from the pedestrians around them. Robert didn’t care. Kelsey needed him and, if he were honest, he needed Kelsey. He lunged forward, grabbing Kelsey’s upper arm. “You will not run away from this simply because it seems hard at the moment.”

His words were as arresting as his grip on his lover’s arm. Kelsey spun back to him, his eyes wide.

“Hard?” he demanded, inching closer to Robert, but also failing to keep his voice down. “You think being used for my connections and having my heart battered like a boat at sea in the process is hard?”

“That is not what I’m doing,” Robert growled, growing more conscious of people staring at them as they spoke. He wanted to pull Kelsey inside one of the buildings nearby, but the best he could do was to drag him around the corner to the slightly less traveled street that led to the factory, leaving June and the others to do what they were perfectly capable of doing and fend for themselves.

“Why can’t you just let me go,” Kelsey complained in a strained voice. His face pinched with anxiety and sadness in a way that had Robert fearful for his state of mind. “I’m worthless to you, and to everyone else.”

Robert grabbed both of Kelsey’s arms and stared fiercely into his eyes. “You are not worthless. I want to rip out the bowels of your father and everyone else who has told you that you are. The way they have behaved toward you is criminal.”

Kelsey lifted his gaze slowly to meet Robert’s, but he didn’t say anything. Robert had the terrible feeling it was because the concept that Kelsey was not to blame for the way he had been treated for so long was entirely foreign to him.

“I do not think of you as heir to your father’s evil,” Robert went on. “None of us are responsible for the actions of our fathers. If
