CHAPTER 6
Herrick was both excited and apprehensive. Soon they would be home, at his motherâs cottage near Scorrybreac. Would this be the end of their journey together? Would Sophie leave him now and return to her friends to tell her tale of how she saved a Scottish Highland warrior from near death and returned him safely to his familyâs home? Did she know, that when she left, he would be doomed to live out the rest of his miserable days with only the memory of her beauty and laughter and fierce little temper to brighten his dreary life? For life surely would be dreary without her.
But she was fae, and he was human; âtwas best he keep that in mind. They lived in separate worlds. Their paths had crossed by mere chance because of Sophieâs whimsical notion to go on an adventure so she could have a story to tell her friends back home on Avalee.
When they reached a point in the road where they could see his home, he brought the horse to a halt.
âThere, Lady Sophie, that cottage over yonder is my home. And down below near the shore is the village of Portree.â
She looked out over the countryside. âThe view must be grand, but why do you choose to live such a distance from the village? Isnât it safer to be near other humans?â
âMy mother is often uncomfortable around others. She prefers her privacy.â Actually, it was the others who were uncomfortable around her. Too often she had foretold of events to come, and this caused many of the village folk to shun her. The future, they said, was best left to the will of God and not spied upon by mere mortals. Over time, she learned to quell her desire to help others with her gift of sight; choosing instead to live apart to avoid their stares and whispered gossip.
Herrickâs mouth suddenly became dry, and he found it difficult to speak. He cleared his throat. âYe have brought me safely home, Lady Sophie. Is this not a fitting ending to yer tale of adventure?â
âCertainly, you would not expect me to leave before I meet your mother. Or are you too proud to admit it was a woman who saved your nearly dead ass and saw you safely home? Are you too ashamed of me to let us meet?â
âYe speak nonsense,â he barked. Ire spiked through Herrick. He was not ungrateful, he was simply trying to let her go gracefully.
Sophie pulled back, glaring. âDo I?â
âYe have said from the beginning, ye plan to leave me.â
âIâll leave you when Iâm damn well good and ready, and not a minute before. So, are we going to stand here and argue, or are you going to let me meet your mother?â
Dang, for a sweet little faerie, she sure was bossy. He rather liked that about her. A grin spread across Herrickâs face as he brought his anger back under control. âTwould be my pleasure and my honor to introduce ye to Ma.
