Parting

Bonnie was standing in the hallway with her bag when Sue Lee opened the door.

“Bonnie, what’s going on! Are you leaving?”

“You’re in command now, lieutenant. My talents are needed elsewhere, Bonnie said, attempting to smile. I was hoping I could get away before you got home. You know how much I hate goodbyes. I left you a long note. Blasted army always hurry and wait,” tears were streaming down her face as she hugged Sue Lee.

Then a horn honked. Bonnie wiped her tears with the back of her hand while grabbing her bag, and she was gone.

Sue Lee felt like someone hit her in the stomach, transfers were the new way of life, but the suddenness had always been difficult. Bonnie was a nurse, and they are in high demand throughout the Pacific theater. No sense in asking where she was going, nor would she leave it in her note; it just wasn’t allowed. Sadly, the information more than likely contained family contacts in case something happens.

Sue Lee needed to unpack and report in. Work would help to push away her sad feelings.

In the morning, after a late-night on duty, Sue Lee sat across from Naomi sharing breakfast.

“I’m sorry to see your friend go. We had little time to talk. When Bonnie received her transfer papers, she rushed around getting ready. It certainly was brief notice. I hope she’ll be safe wherever she ends up.” Naomi spread jam on her toast then asked. “What’s happening in Bodega?”

Sue Lee told her the complete story, ending with Kane’s idea of the article. She was also hoping Naomi would know something about Yoshi’s shirts. She showed her the material she took from Yoshi’s truck.

“That’s puzzling; this is one of his old patterns, and I haven’t seen it for years.”

“Who picked the patterns?” Sue Lee said, turning down the Philco radio that sat on the table between them. It was one item Bonnie left in their care.

“He always picked the pattern. He loved his colors. Anyone could find the pattern in the McCall catalog and have someone with sewing experience make the shirt. But why?”

“I wonder if Naka thought the shirts were a code? Sue Lee pointed at the torn piece with her toast, then saw the clock behind Naomi. Oh, blast it all, look, I got to get ready. When are you back on duty?”

“This is my day off. I thought I could run over and visit Father George.”

“Take my car and while you’re visiting, ask him if he’s ever met the priest in Bodega,” Sue Lee grabbed the car keys from the counter, pushing them across the table as she left the room. “Ciao!” She shouted from her bedroom.

Naomi didn’t have to go alone—Captain James told her she could not leave the base without a Caucasian escort, preferably a male and, she must be in uniform.

She asked Billy to drive her. PFC Bill Singer was one of the students Naomi tutored after school when he was attending St. Ignatius high school in San Francisco before he joined the army.
