Chapter

Thirty-Four

SKY

After being kicked out of Tommie’s club, I took my drunk ass home, climbed in my bed, fully clothed and cried myself to sleep. That night, I ended up dreaming about Ryzen—as if having him conquer my thoughts in the daytime wasn’t bad enough.

An hour later, I woke up breathing hard in my shock after realizing he was the same Ryzen from my childhood. “Oh my God!” I gasped. “Oh my God! Holy shit!”

I knew his ass looked familiar!

Jumping out of bed, I ran to my hallway closet and grabbed my photo album off the top shelf. Inside were pictures of my mom and dad, Moscow as a kitten and our old house in South Central. In the very back of the album was one faded photo of me and my childhood friend…

“Ryzen?”

I gently ran my fingers over the aged and weathered photo. Then I thought about what he said as we were leaving the seafood festival:

“It took me a long time to grow into my looks. Back when I was a kid, I was funny looking, buck-toothed and skinny as fuck. I was also really small for my age so I got picked on a lot. Trust me, no girls were checkin’ for my ass.”

I studied the picture. Ryzen was indeed small for his age, he wore glasses and was certainly nothing to write home about. But he was my best fucking friend. As a matter of fact, he was like family to me.

When he moved away without warning, I despised him for not calling or writing. I hated him so much that I forced myself to forget about him.

“Why am I just now remembering this shit?” I asked aloud.

Beads of sweat dotted my forehead as I stood there, flabbergasted. I was certain that Ryzen knew all along. Now I understood why he told Zuri that we knew each other from way back.

Suddenly, all the memories of our childhood came flooding back to me at once. The mental montage left me in tears and I was overwhelmed at the discovery.

There’s just no way, I told myself in denial. He looks so different now.

I thought about how sad and upset Ryzen looked the last time I’d saw him. Why was he so angry? And what did he mean when he said I didn’t understand him and his wife’s situation. What situation was that exactly?

Grabbing my phone, I opened Safari and typed RYZEN COLEMAN into Google’s search box. Seconds later, I discovered the accounting firm he worked for—which was ironically owned by Tommie’s father. There were also a few Forbes articles I found on him. To only be 28, Ryzen had accomplished quite a lot at his young age. However, each one of his achievements seemed to be tied to Tommie and his family in some way.

I never even knew Tommie and Ryzen were friends.

I was still pissed off at Ryzen, but I wanted to see him one last time. I had to talk to him. I had to know if
