Chapter 19
Denver woke up early on Monday morning, got himself ready for his day, packed up his bag, and then sat in the uncomfortable motel chair, staring at his phone, wondering when it was no longer too early to call Jenna.
She had acted weird the night before, and he felt so bad for wasting her time, drawing up a deed and setting up a meeting on a Sunday for nothing. Of course he was going to pay her, but still, her time was worth more than money. He had apologized the night before, and sheâd told him not to worry about it, but still. Figuring that she probably wanted to be done with the Bridge brothers altogether, he had told her that he would find another ride back to the airport. He had no idea if one of his brothers would help him out, but he was willing to try.
But she had insisted that she would take him.
Now he wondered if she still planned on meeting with Kash. She didnât need to anymore, right?
It was seven oâclock. Though she was probably up getting Emmylou ready for day care, it was probably still too early to call.
He considered going to the jail himself and trying to charm his way in. Heâd used his charm on similar missions, but heâd never tried to get into a jail.
His knee bounced up and down, shaking the whole chair. He couldnât just sit here; he was going to go nuts.
His phone chimed, and he sat up so suddenly that he knocked it on the floor. He lunged for it and opened the message to see it was from Jenna. âIâm so sorry. I forgot what time you need to be at the airport.â
This was his chance. He dialed her number.
She answered with suspicion in her voice. He tried to laugh it off. âSorry to answer your text with a phone call. I know youâre busy.â He could hear Emmylou in the background. âHi, cutie pie! Are you still going to see Kash?â
âDid you just call me cutie pie, or did you ask my toddler if sheâs going to jail?â
Her quip flummoxed him.
âJust kidding. Yes, Iâm still going to meet with him. I donât want to leave him hanging.â
âI donât want to annoy you, Jenna. I really donât. Youâve explained to me why I canât go with you, and I get that, but man, this might be my only shot. I really wish I could change your mind.â
âYour time isnât as limited as you think. Heâs not going to prison. Iâm getting him out.â
âI know, but ...â
âOh, right. Youâre saying that this is time sensitive because of your schedule? Not because of his. You want to see him and ease your conscience before you go back to your big-time life?â
Good grief. âHave you been hanging out with Tucker?â
She let out a short staccato laugh. âSorry. I havenât had much coffee yet. Iâm not going to smuggle you into the jail. Now what time do you need to be at the airport?â
âEleven.
