HOURS LATER, JAYLA blinked her eyes open to the familiar chime of her cell phone ringing incessantly. When did she fall asleep? A quick look at the clock told her she had gotten more than a few hours of sleep as it was now nine in the morning.

A groan escaped her lips as she fumbled to shut off the cell’s alarm clock before it woke up the whole building. She resisted the urge to hurl it out the window. Finally, she found the ’dismiss’ button on the screen and tapped it repeatedly. Oh, sweet, sweet beautiful silence.

Jayla fell back on the bed and exhaled audibly. Wait a minute. She grabbed her phone and immediately saw the bright pink envelope icon at the top of the screen. A missed message and a voicemail. She must have been sleeping like a rock not to hear the phone ringing. Could it have been Eric? She quickly tapped through the menu to get to voicemail. Then she stopped and threw her phone down. What am I doing?

It could have something to do with work.

Great, now she had to find out.

With a sigh, she reached over to her phone and brought up her messages. It was Donna! Relief overcame her as she tapped to replay the message.

“Jayla, we keep missing each other!” Donna’s cheery voice chimed over the speakerphone. “I was hoping to get a hold of you this morning, but it appears you may still be sleeping. We definitely need to catch up. I have some time off today for lunch if you’d like to get together and chat. I’ll be in a meeting all morning until about eleven. Call me, okay? Hope you are doing well and not working too hard.”

Eleven am. That would still give her a few more hours of sleep if she needed it. It’ll definitely give her some work time.

Jayla made a mental note to call Donna back in a few hours to confirm the lunch. Perhaps her mentor will have some words for her about Eric Jansen. No doubt, she would have to approach any questions with caution.

First, she needed to wake up.

After lounging in bed for another half hour, Jayla felt the call of her tummy demanding food. She ordered a fruit plate and a short stack of pancakes before settling in at the desk in front of the hotel laptop. Tapping filled the air along with the soft beat of rain against the window outside. She logged into her bank account to pay the studio and her condo’s rent when she froze at the balance. Seventy-seven thousand dollars. She exhaled slowly.

“My account has never seen that much before.” Even though she had finalized the cost of her time and work before with Eric, seeing it in black and white on the screen still shocked her. Right away she moved some to her savings and paid a few months in advance of both her studio and condo. Still, there was money enough to burn. Perhaps she would visit the gift shop later and buy herself a new dress to celebrate.
