Chapter 9

Lady Merton’s birthday celebration had always been considered a highlight of the season by the ton, not due to the Viscountess’s popularity but because she spared no expense when it came to entertainment. This year was no different, as the finest acrobats in Europe filled the house with their tumbling and juggling. The centre of the ballroom was taken up by large sheets of fabric suspended from the ceiling that the acrobats climbed, twisting the fabric around their bodies and using the tension to perform their contortions high above the enthralled guests below.

Despite all the spectacle, Eleanor found herself suffering from a case of ennui tonight.

In fact, she had felt it plaguing her for more than a fortnight now, and she could not seem to throw it off.

She had tried her best to occupy her time. She paid calls to her friends and acquaintances, hosted tea at Norwich House, and attended the opera, the theatre, soirees, musicales, and every bit of entertainment she could find, yet the feeling lingered.

She had tried self-reflection to determine the cause, but when she realized the feeling had started not long after a particular person stopped attending society events, she had refused to reflect on it any further.

Her ennui had nothing to do with Lord Kerwood’s absence. The fact that she had not seen him since he had called on her after the dinner party meant nothing to her.

The ennui must come from the fact that the courtship between Thomas and Lady Henrietta had been progressing perfectly. Thomas had called on Lady Henrietta daily and danced with her at every ball. She had joined him as a personal guest in their box at the opera and theatre. They had promenaded and taken carriage rides in the Park. It was proper courting, and the ton was buzzing with speculation about when Thomas would propose.

With a proposal imminent, the last of her siblings had found their future, and Eleanor had nothing left to do.

That must be the true source of her ennui. It could not be anything else.

It was most certainly not that she was wondering why Lord Kerwood had been absent since they had reached their detente in the Norwich House morning room. They debated the Corn Laws before moving on to the most recent proposed legislation being debated in Parliament, and he had been impressed that she was aware of the situation. It had been a pleasant conversation, and she was certain he had left Norwich House that day in good spirits.

She had extended an invitation to Lady Kerwood to join them in their box at the opera later in the week, expecting Lord Kerwood to attend as well, but he had not, and Lady Kerwood had made excuses for him being occupied with business affairs.

When his absence continued, Eleanor wondered if his business had taken him away from Town, but she could not think of a way to ask Lady Kerwood without giving away that she was curious about him.

No, she was not curious, only worried that his absence would affect the courtship between Thomas and Lady Henrietta.
