Graham grabbed the straps of his pack and lifted it, shifting the weight on his back. Rose looked—shocked. Her eyes were slightly wider than usual and her pouty lips were parted.

“I’ve never seen the waterfall.”

Her words were spoken much softer than her usual tone around him. “Didn’t think so. Now are you going to follow me up or not?”

Her head bobbed up and down and one corner of her mouth ticked up into what was almost a half smile. “Let’s go then. If you need to stop and rest, just say so.”

He turned and started up the trail. The sun still wasn’t up high enough to light the entire path, but what shined through the trees was bright enough for him to see where he was going. Not that it mattered. He’d climbed this mountain so many times, he could do it in his sleep.

A snapped branch behind him made him look over his shoulder. Rose wasn’t too far behind him. He slowed his pace so he didn’t outdistance her too much.

The morning was cool, the air brisk. He inhaled deeply, taking in the scent of pine and the faint trace of flowers. Life was returning to the mountain. The winter frost had burned away to the point things were growing again. He wondered if the cabin roof had leaked any. He’d patched it before coming down the mountain but with limited supplies, it had been a shoddy job.

They’d traveled a good distance before Rose told him to stop. Her face was red when he turned to look at her. “You all right?”

“Yes. Just let me catch my breath.” She had taken her shawl off and had it tied around her middle. Doing so had accentuated her small waist and wide hips. Damn if she wasn’t a good looking woman. Too bad her heart was as black and cold as the night.

He ran an appreciative glance down the length of her body. The dress she wore was off white with small brown flowers dotting the fabric. It was buttoned clean to her neck, but it pushed her breasts up, making them look perfectly round and firm. As usual, her hair was braided and wrapped around her head like a crown.

Long minutes later, she motioned up the hill with her hand. “Let’s go.”

He had to stop twice more before the land started to even out and the sound of birdsong was drowned out by the rush of water. “Almost there.”

“Why didn’t you tell me it was going to take hours to get up here? I feel I’m going to faint if I don’t sit down soon.”

He grinned and kept walking. “The exercise is good for you, Rose.”

He’d lost count of the number of picnics his family had enjoyed up here over the years. It was one of his mother’s favorite places before she’d died. It was a good long walk, but the trail snaked around the mountain, small glimpses between the trees showing hundreds of miles of land as far as the eye could see and with views like these, he didn’t know how anyone could complain.
