The morning was busy, but not as hectic as the previous days. When there was a block of totally empty time and just two people in the waiting room—both fifteen minutes early to their appointments—her dad asked everyone to come into the break room for a quick chat.

Anais took in his downcast expression. “Is everything okay?”

Her dad’s face smoothed out and he smiled. “Everything’s fine. I just thought you’d like to share the news with everyone about the staffing changes that will happen in January.”

The floor shifted under her feet. The NPs looked at her expectantly, while Clementine frowned a little.

“You mean the fellowship?”

Her dad chuckled. “Was there somewhere else you were planning on going next year?”

An image of sitting in a grandstand watching Jackson play flashed through her mind, her family at her side. She shook her head, not quite believing her dad had finally come around to see things her way.

“Austin’s agreed to come work here?”

“Yes, I just called to offer him the job, and he said yes.”

That sneak. She’d have to hound him later about holding out on the information.

The news seemed to perk up Clementine and Anais held back a sigh. She’d have to have a talk with him about staying away from her little sister, even if Minnie’s shyness would do most of the work for her.

Plastering a smile on her face, Anais told the NPs all about her fellowship in Boston, how she’d be able to increase her experience and knowledge in women’s health, while Austin would be bringing his experience in emergency medicine to their small medical practice. Her dad was smiling, but she could see the sadness in his eyes and in the set of his shoulders. It was clear that he didn’t want her to go, but he was done trying to stop her from doing something that she wanted and would benefit the town so much.

The two NPs wished Anais luck and everyone started talking about how useful it would be for Jasper Creek to have someone close by to deal with the increase in accidents over the past few years. Though they all laughed when they realized Bastien probably accounted for at least half of those.

When she got into the car a few hours later, she was feeling buoyed and cheerful in a way she hadn’t for weeks.

“You look much less worried than you did yesterday,” Jackson said at once.

“I got some good news this morning.” Anais leaned back in her seat as he made the turn out of the parking lot.

“That’s great.” A smile spread across his face, lighting up his eyes. “Anything you’d like to share?”

“I need to call Austin first.” She hadn’t had time yet, and it wouldn’t feel entirely real until her friend had confirmed that he’d be moving into her office in a few months.

Jackson’s expression went from sunny to dark in an instant, his knuckles white where he gripped the steering wheel. “Guess it must be something only doctors would understand.”

“What?” Anais turned in her seat, confused, before realization hit.
