Chapter 6

As much as they needed the extra set of hands to get the resort ready for the holiday weekend, Halle had to get Nick Green as far away from here – from her – as soon as possible. The last thing she needed was for him to make good on his suggestion – no, his threat – of sticking around here indefinitely. No, no, no! It had taken everything in her to not melt against his side as they walked arm and arm when she gave him that tour of the property. It had been a feat of will to not succumb to the alluring scent of his aftershave.

Halle marched down the hallway to the supply closet. She yanked out a mop and pail with a little more effort than she had intended. The force of the action nearly sent her off-balance. She balanced herself just in time with a hand pressed against the door frame.

Incredible. Here she was unraveling already and all Nick had done was barely flirt with her by holding her hand and offering to stay on longer to help get things ready. “You need to pull it together before you completely lose it for real.”

A lock of her hair loosened from her pins, falling into her face. She absently swiped it back into place. She had to laugh at herself. If only the rest of the toney Colored Washingtonian set could see her now. Perfectly polished Halle Duncan hauling pails and mops with her normally coiffed hair askew.

Ha! Most of them would not bring themselves to believe that it was her. That crowd tended to put her on a pedestal for reasons unknown to her. Maybe it had to do with her late husband’s position and prestige. Or, the fanfare with which their marriage had served as her debut into Colored Washington society.

She began swabbing at the hallway floor at a furious pace. No. She would not encourage him. The eight year gap in their ages made him much too young for her.

And, it was too soon. The anniversary of Edgar’s death wouldn’t pass for another six weeks.

Besides, it just wasn’t proper. Nick had been Edgar’s protégé for heaven’s sake! People would think they’d been sneaking around her husband’s back for years.

And, most importantly, she was only just learning how to be her own woman. If she and Amelia could pull off a successful season here, two women on their own... Well, wouldn’t that be something? Out of all the reasons she could think of to not get involved with the way too handsome Dr. Nick Green, this one was the most compelling.

Halle had something to prove to the world. Hell, Halle had something to prove to herself.

“That settles it then.” She bent down to lay the pail on its side, then began to sweep the accumulated dust into it. “I’ll just have to avoid him until we open for the season. Thank him for his help, and then send him on his way.”

She continued sweeping up the small mess at her feet.
