A week after the losing his stomach incident, Alex was grounded once again and this time through no fault of his own. For some stupid reason no one had thought to fit filters on the engines and they were now packing up on a regular basis as the dust from the rudimentary airstrip got sucked in.

Some clever sod had rigged up a shower using a bucket with holes in it and a piece of string. After a few teething problems when the entire bucket of water had fallen on the unfortunate man standing underneath, they’d got it working properly.

It was an ingenious contraption and there were now half a dozen of them dotted about the camp. He certainly felt better being able to get clean all over. Nobody bothered to shave every day, but they still looked reasonable.

‘Oi, Skip, there’s a letter for you,’ someone yelled as he was waving the pale blue envelope above his head.

It could be a letter from his mother, but he doubted it, so with any luck it was an answer from Babs after all this time. He took it to his tent, which fortunately was empty. He sat on the camp bed and looked at it. Definitely Babs’s writing. Bloody hell – his hands were shaking.

He was careful opening the flimsy envelope as he didn’t want to tear the contents. He closed his eyes, sent up a quick prayer and then opened the paper.

By the time he got to the bottom he was a new man. She’d forgiven him. She loved him and she’d sent John packing. The news couldn’t be better. He looked at the date – it had been written only a week ago so had been forwarded from Holmsley South with commendable speed.

After scrabbling about in his locker he found his fountain pen and something to write on. Not airmail paper, but anything would do. His kite was out of action today so he would write to Babs and also to his mother. It wasn’t right that Charlie and Julia no longer saw their grandparents.

This letter was far easier to write than the previous one. He told Babs about losing his stomach, about his kite being grounded, about the makeshift showers but didn’t mention the awful loss of life in the wing. By the time he was demobbed his daughter might well be walking. He’d be a stranger to her – but some of the poor sods had been away for the duration. He smiled wryly. Any babies born to their wives wouldn’t be theirs and would be an unwelcome shock.

A few of the blokes had been seriously shot up, received basic first aid from the doctor on the base, and had then been shipped home to Blighty.

The only good thing about being in Normandy was that all the flyers knew they were doing a damn good job and their efforts were saving lives, possibly thousands. The Luftwaffe had never appeared in any numbers. Those bloody doodlebugs continued to drop on London, killing hundreds despite the fact that the launch sites were continually being bombed.
