The big day had at last arrived and Digby once more escorted Constance across the frozen Thames. The morning sun shone through the fog, the rays of light almost magical. A veritable village had sprung up almost overnight on the ice as vendors readied their own booths for the customers who would buy their wares.

“I am glad you have Marshall with you,” Digby said, as he peered back over his shoulder to see the man several steps behind. The footman knew his job well, as he kept a close eye on his charge and the surrounding area.

“He has become a bodyguard of sorts,” Constance whispered. “Aunt Penelope insisted when I told her what happened at the theater, but we have also offered his services to ensure those attending the breakfast have paid for the privilege of being in attendance.”

“I understand the Duchess has commandeered a whole section of the ice on the outskirts of this town that has suddenly appeared.”

Constance giggled. “Just wait until you see what is happening, Digby. It will make your head spin!”

As they neared the area, it was not hard to miss the crowd who had gathered to witness the spectacle before them. It was as though all of London had turned up to see the goings on. An army of Haverford servants and others from various noble houses had erected a sumptuous marquee on the ice. The tent dwarfed the other booths and shelters around it and must have been as large as the Haverford ballroom itself! Men carried rolls of carpeting to cover the ice and more followed with chairs, tables, and crates.

“What is in the boxes?” Digby asked.

Constance laughed. “Oh, just little things like linen for the tables, cotton to drape the walls, furs and woolen shawls to keep warm… that sort of thing.”

A chuckle escaped Digby. “As usual, Her Grace has spared no expense and thought of everything.”

Constance pointed to several soldiers who stood near a makeshift barrier of bollards and ribbons. “She even thought of a guard of returned soldiers and sailors who have recovered enough from their wounds to serve for the day. That is where Marshall shall also help if he is needed.”

“Her Grace is a marvel,” Digby mused.

“She is at that,” Constance agreed. “Perhaps we can steal away for a while to see the booths. Once the auction and breakfast starts, I fear I will be occupied until after the bidding.”

“I heard there is an elephant walking the ice.”

Constance’s eyes widened. “Really? Oh, Digby, we must go see it.”

“Then let us see if we can find the beast,” he said, giving her a wink. He enjoyed making his lady happy. He would do anything just so she would smile upon him again and again.
