Chapter Thirteen

A couple of days later, Tyler laid out three event tickets on top of the coffee bar.

“What’s this?” Kristen eyed the tickets in surprise.

Tyler shrugged. “Tickets to see Joshua Bell. I hope you didn’t buy them yet.”

Yet? Ha. As if she could afford them.

She slid the tickets back in his direction. “Tyler, this is way too much.”

“Seth is a brilliant violinist—he should get a glimpse of his future.” Tyler slid them toward her once more.

Her breath caught. The thought of her son becoming the next Joshua Bell filled her with pride. And a little fear. But she couldn’t just take these tickets. She caught a glimpse of the face value and nearly choked. Orchestra seats. And she sure couldn’t buy them either.

“Thank you, but we can’t.” She slid the tickets back across the bar to him.

“You mean you won’t.” Placing his fingers on the tickets, he slid them back to her.

“Tyler.” Grasping his wrist, she tried to push them away again, but couldn’t budge him.

“Kristen.”

She rolled her eyes at their idiocy. “I can’t afford to repay you.”

“Who says you have to? They’re a gift.”

At her continued defiance, he sighed. “Okay. If you feel you must repay me, how about this? Coffee and a cinnamon bun for the next two weeks, no charge.”

“Pfft. That wouldn’t even come close to what these tickets cost.” She pointed at the tickets for emphasis.

He shrugged and leaned across the counter, saying for her ears only, “I can think of another form of payment.” He wore a sexy grin, and though she should feel insulted by the insinuation, she couldn’t argue with the flurry of butterflies that took flight in her belly at the thought.

Nevertheless, she shoved his shoulder. “You wish.”

He put his mouth to her ear. “Oh, I more than wish. I crave. I dream. I yearn.”

She shivered at the tickling of his breath against her skin, and the thoughts his words conjured sent her pulse into overdrive. Then she caved like a cheap suitcase. “Okay. Fine.”

Tyler popped up, grinning like a fool. “Fine you’ll repay me with sexual favors? Or fine you’ll take the tickets?”

“I’ll take the tickets, but I’ll repay you with coffee and cinnamon rolls.”

“I’ll take what I can get. I’ll pick you both up Saturday at four-thirty. Dinner then the show.” Tucking the tickets into his jacket pocket with one hand, he slapped the coffee bar with his other. “Don’t be late.”
