THE NEXT night, Billy came to visit me again in St. Michael. We met quietly on the terrace below my bedroom window. Strangely, I was able to see him clearer now.

“Of course no one will believe you. Just listen to yourself,” he scowled.

“I’ve never been a liar,” I answered.

He continued to scold me for talking about Surritz.

“Because then everyone will go there?” I asked.

“You have to be a very highly developed individual to see Surritz by holding the magical stones. Everyone has lived hundreds of lives on Earth before they advance to living in Surritz. If you have not lived in Surritz before, it is impossible to experience it until you are born in that lifetime.”

He moved his paws in the snow, creating the footprints I had become so familiar with. I guess it was true that people from Surritz did feel really uncomfortable without the water surrounding them. I could feel him breathe heavier now like he was anxious.

“That’s why we were so confused and could not find you because somehow you ended up back on Earth after your life as Nina ended,” he said.

I wanted to tell Billy what I had discovered under the Tree of Waking Thoughts. This was the perfect opportunity.

“Stasia,” Mama opened up the door and startled me. “Are you talking to someone?”

I shook the shock off my face and pulled my jacket tighter. “No, just myself,” I said quickly, waiting for her to go back inside so I could continue talking with Billy. Instead, she stood still.

“We will figure it out. I’m willing to listen. I don’t want you to feel alone.” She touched my shoulder before hugging me. Was she one of the monsters?

“But, there is something strange that I want to talk to you about. Let’s go inside,” she said as we walked into the kitchen.

“What?” I asked expecting her to say that the weather was getting colder, or that Pa was not selling as many Brooderkaas. Maybe Amelie’s father wanted to do more research on me or I had failed my dragon classes in Puncchit.

“Maisy said that she used to have an imaginary friend too.”

“Ok, Mama. I don’t feel alone. I get it.”

She shook her head, “The strange part is that his name was the same as your imaginary friend.”

My eyes shot up to her red lips. I saw them moving slowly but all I heard her say was, “Abe Carlton.”
