CHAPTER FOUR

Later that afternoon, Ariadne returned to her room, feeling unsettled. Though Mr. Wilson had been a model of propriety, she had felt nothing at all in his presence. Marrying him would be like marrying her brother Martin.

But throughout the rest of the ride, she’d felt a sense of anger. First, a slight flame of irritation, and then it flared into a blaze. Though she had never intended to develop feelings for Lord Harcourt, his kindness had slipped beneath her defenses. She’d allowed herself to dream that a man like him might care for her. And when he’d kissed her last night, the entire world had fallen away as if she’d awakened from slumber.

A letter and a small package had arrived this morning, from her father. She didn’t know why he’d sent it here, but she decided to isolate herself in the library to open it. Above, she heard the soft strains of lute music, and she eyed the ceiling. “If you’re the matchmaking ghost they say you are, why don’t you lend me a hand, won’t you?”

With that, she sighed and opened the letter. She read the first few lines, not understanding at first. But then, tears gathered at her eyes.
