Candice had opted for immunotherapy treatment, and her new scans showed that her laryngeal cells seemed to be responding positively already, which only heightened Adrienne’s buzz over her side project. She almost forgot the Franco-shaped elephant in the room, because she found herself so busy she barely had time to breathe.

Bianca had made firm friends with several of the other patients on the programme during her course of treatment and had promised to put Adrienne in touch with them. She knew she had a lot of work ahead of her, turning those accounts into moving, tangible evidence that the drug needed moving to phase three, but her mother’s encouragement had lit a rocket under her, and she sped from the room after Candice had left, ready to get on the phone again.

Maybe she’d been softened by Adrienne’s encouragement with her baking, but her mother hadn’t mentioned the Baron’s visit again. Perhaps she’d decided to forget she’d ever tried to set them up. Then again, maybe the Queen was biding her time before bringing it up again...with Papa’s support, too.

Her mother’s omission didn’t sit right with Adrienne, now that she thought about it. She had mentioned Franco a lot in her last letter, and it didn’t take a fool to fill in the gaps—as she was quite certain Marco Perretta had already.

No, Adrienne.

Her old anxieties were not permitted to follow her into this project. There was too much at stake.
