The question of writing is so mixed up with the outside that Derrida feels the need to clarify his point of view. In a text dedicated expressly to the role of writing, he not only includes the inside/outside polarity on the list of dichotomies that organize the metaphysical grid of the West, he makes it the matrix for all the others:

In order for these contrary values (good/evil, true/false, essence/appearance, inside/outside, etc.), to be in opposition, each of the terms must be simply external to the other, which means that one of these oppositions (the opposition between inside and outside) must already be accredited as the matrix of all possible opposition.8
