Chapter Thirteen
âI canât believe you ran off to elope,â Heather said the next day as she sat across from Charles in the drawing room. âAnd to a lady recently widowed!â
Charles urged his sister to keep her voice down. The servants didnât need to overhear her. âA little decorum wouldnât hurt,â he told her. âYou need to practice some restraint.â
âYou ran off to Gretna Green with Jonathanâs widow, and youâre telling me to show restraint?â
He shifted uncomfortably in the chair. âJonathan wasnât even married to her for more than a day.â
She crossed her arms and shook her head at him. âIf I had done something like that, you would have come after me and dragged me back to London.â Her eyes grew wide. âCome to think of it, you did exactly that. You went all the way to Gillâs estate and forced me to return to London.â
He rolled his eyes. âAre you ever going to forget that? I thought Gill didnât want to marry you. He gave me no indication that he was secretly hoping youâd kidnap him.â
âYou didnât give me or Gill a chance to explain the situation. Thatâs why it upset me so much. All you did was rush to conclusions.â
âYes, Iâm aware of that.â Again, he rolled his eyes. Just how long was she going to remind him of that one little incident in his otherwise pristine past? âI canât go back and chance any of it. Why mention it every time weâre together?â
âI donât mention it every time weâre together.â
âIt sure seems like it.â
The maid came into the room and set down the tea and crumpets. Charles waited until the maid was gone before he poured tea into their cups.
âI didnât even know you were in love with Eris until Reina explained why you went missing,â Heather said. âMother and Father were appalled. Theyâre doing everything possible to keep this scandal from spreading all over London.â
âIâm surprised theyâre more shocked by what I did than you kidnapping someone. I didnât force Eris to go with me. She willingly joined me.â
âGill hadnât just lost his first wife, and even if he had, itâs more acceptable for a gentleman to marry right away than for a lady to. What if Eris is carrying Jonathanâs child?â
âSheâs not.â
âHow can you be sure?â
âHe died on their wedding night before they had time toâ¦â His face warmed, and he struggled with how to continue.
Fortunately, that wasnât necessary since his sisterâs eyebrows rose. âDid Eris tell you this?â
Yes, that was a safe way to proceed. Heâd rather say that than to tell his sister the evidence of Erisâ virginity had been too obvious to miss. âYes, she did.â
âCan you trust her to be honest about it?â
âWhy would she lie about something like that?â
His sister paused as she thought over the question. âWell, I suppose there wouldnât be a reason sheâd lie about it. But are you sure? The constable wasnât sure exactly when Jonathan died, and a titled gentlemanâs first priority is to have an heir.
