Three eider ducks harvest mussels from the seabed. Each eider can eat hundreds of mussels a day, which they swallow whole.

QUACK, QUACK, OOPS!

Filming ducks sounds easy, particularly when compared to other wild animals. After all, the local town near the location had a population of eiders that have been attracting visitors for over 30 years. Raz Rasmussen was even told that many of the eiders could be reliably hand fed. When the team arrived, however, the place was pretty much duckless. As mentioned in a previous chapter, natural history filmmakers are often told by the locals that the animal and behaviour they’ve come to film would have been much easier to find and better if done earlier (as in a previous week or month) but here, at least, it was true … We really should have been filming in Saltstraumen the year before. Numbers of eider ducks have, apparently, been plummeting across Norway – why, nobody seemed to know. We did eventually find a population to film underwater, although, for some of the team, this involved a 13-hour car journey over a snowy mountain, driving behind a safety vehicle with tank tracks and snowplough, going at seven kilometres an hour.
