An hour later, he assisted her with her coat. “I know you wish to take tea.” He smiled down at her, anticipating her surprise.

Elizabeth put on her hat, then turned the collar of her coat higher. “And we ought to be back before dark.”

But as he took her outside, she gave his arm a squeeze. “Now I see what you’ve done.”

The groom led the ponies forward, and Darcy assisted her up into the phaeton. He climbed up beside her and took the reins, nodding at the groom, who stepped back.

“William?” She sounded puzzled. “Have you several pairs just for the phaeton? These are darker greys than the ponies yesterday.”

He laughed. “You’re very observant. But no, they are the same animals.”

She gave him a look. “Then how have they changed colour?”

He tried to stop his lips twitching. “This is their usual colour. I believe the grooms yesterday wanted to make it seem more magical for you, so I think they must have brushed a quantity of flour into their coats. At least, I saw a cloud of white as they were groomed yesterday evening.”

She gazed at him in surprise. “They must be extraordinarily loyal to you to take such extra care.”

“I am fortunate,” he agreed, and urged the ponies to a trot.
