Rayna wanted to have dinner and a sleepover at Grandma Alannahâs and since sending her across an hour ago, Iâve been lost as to what to do. I found myself heading over to the bar. Leo is nowhere to be seen but I join Harper, JJ, Mason, and Aspen, and notice Jonah over by the pool table. Heâs not in a game, heâs more interested in one of Zaraâs friends, laughing as she talks, and running his hands over her ass as he pulls her against him. No wonder Beth feels nothing, the pain of betrayal from the man who tells you he loves you would be too much for anyone to bear.
âYouâre quiet tonight,â Harper notes, adding, âIs something wrong?â
âYes, but not with meâ¦â I trail off, watching Jonah take Zaraâs friend up the stairs. âI need to go. Iâll catch up with you later.â
Given that Jonah is here with another woman, I head straight to the main house where Beth will be. Pushing through the front door, I find her staring at the wall from the couch again.
âHey, do you still want to leave?â I blurt out.
She jumps up to her feet and rushes over to me. Grabbing onto my arms, she says, âYouâre going to help me?â
âYes, and if you still want to leave, we have to go now.â
âIâll go get my bag.â
She runs up the stairs and doesnât keep me waiting long until sheâs running back down them. I look out and see the coast is clear. My heart pounds as we walk over to my car, and I thank everyone I need to that no oneâs around to see us drive by the bar.
âDo you think the prospect will know who I am when Jonah notices Iâm gone?â
The panic in her voice has a chill running down my spine.
I lower my window and call him over. âAs far as anyoneâs concerned, Iâve headed into town alone. Okay?â
âIf Leo asksâ¦â
âLeo will understand, but if anyone else asks, Iâm alone.â
âGot ya.â
He jogs around the car and pushes open the gate. Once weâre on the road, Beth begins to relax and though I have no idea what sheâs been through, I know the depth of darkness inside oneself.
âDo you know where youâre going to go?â
âNope, but Iâll choose somewhere at the bus station.â
âYouâve got cash?â
I have about fifty bucks in my purse but that wonât get her very far.
âIâve got enough for what I need.â
Sheâs quiet for the rest of the drive and I park up and walk with her to the ticket office. She buys a ticket that will get her up north and I wonder if it wouldâve been better to head south to where she must have family. But then I tell myself itâs her business and I donât really know this woman. Sheâll have a reason to head north.
We find her bus and my hands start to shake like weâre about to be caught. I donât know Jonah but the few things I do know donât show him in a good light.
