âLook, Gran! Mum let us wear our pajamas!â Ella announced proudly as she and Lucy came bursting in the door.
Emily came out of the kitchen. âWell, look at that! You certainly are! Youâre going to be very cozy and comfortable tonight. Iâve got everything all set up in my guest bedroom for you.â
âBut I thought we were going to get to watch the movies with you guys!â Lucy protested.
âDarling, itâs a movie for grownups. Gran rented a special movie just for the two of you,â Phoebe explained to her girls.
âI think youâre really going to like it,â Emily added. She and Phoebe had gotten together on the movie, so she knew the girls hadnât seen it yet.
Lucy folded her arms over her chest, nearly dropping the blanket sheâd brought in. âBut Iâm eight! I shouldnât have to watch baby movies like Ella!â
âIâm not a baby!â Ella protested.
âAll right, girls. Thatâs enough.â Matthew stepped inside, carrying the rest of the girlsâ things, including all the stuffed animals and pillows theyâd insisted on bringing along. âGran has gone to the trouble to make sure the two of you can have a nice evening. You owe her a little bit of appreciation and respect, and that doesnât include fussing at each other.â
âAll right,â Lucy conceded begrudgingly.
Emily very much wanted the two of them to have a good night. âIf youâre very good, Iâve got a special dessert ready to go for you.â
âYou do?â Lucyâs eyes went wide, and she forgot all about having to watch the kidsâ movie. âWhat is it?â
âItâs a surprise,â Emily reminded her with a smile. âYouâll have to make sure you eat some dinner and get along nicely with your sister, and then youâll get to find out!â
âCome on, Ella.â Lucy put her arm around her sisterâs shoulders and guided her down the hallway. âIâll let you cuddle with Stardust for the first half of the movie.â
Phoebe raised her brows. âThat must be some phenomenal dessert if Lucy is actually giving up her unicorn for any amount of time.â
Nathan and Genevieve arrived next, dressed to the nines as they always were.
âYouâre not going to be comfortable in that,â Emily protested as she tugged teasingly on Nathanâs suit jacket. âYou shouldâve gone home and changed after work.â
âDonât be silly, Mother. Iâm always comfortable in a suit.â He bent to kiss her cheek.
âAnd you look good in it, too,â Genevieve agreed. âEmily, was that information about Elliot Byrne helpful to you?â
âOh, very,â she confirmed as she pulled the hot tray of nachos out of the oven. âI found him on his set and got to speak with him for quite some time.â
âYou did?â The gorgeous and influential Genevieve, who probably wouldnât be startled by meeting even the most glamorous celebrity, leaned forward with her eyes wide. âHe actually let you onto the set? And you got to talk with him?â
Emily tried not to laugh, but it was hard considering sheâd almost never seen her daughter-in-law behave like this. âOh, yes. He was quite busy with his work, and he was very involved with it, but he was also very chatty.
