Jack was angry when I told him about Katie and losing my job and then he frowned.

‘After the way you’ve slaved for him! He’s got a damned cheek if you ask me. Do you want me to go round there and give him one?’

‘No, of course I don’t, Jack! Please promise me you won’t go near him. Ann was upset over Katie. I can’t blame her. Perhaps I shouldn’t have taken the medicine for her after Mr Hopkins told me it had changed. In a way it is my fault that Katie is ill.’

‘Don’t be daft! If anyone is responsible it is the person who made that stuff up, or Ann for giving it to her baby. From what you told me she gave Katie far too much all the way through just to keep her quiet.’

‘I did think she gave Katie too much. I told both her and Bill at the start that they needed to be careful—and I did warn her that the new stuff was stronger.’

‘If she had anything about her, she would admit it,’ Jack said. ‘It’s just as well you’ve left there, Maggie love. I didn’t like you walking home alone at night and I couldn’t always be there to fetch you.’

‘I’m sorry about the money, Jack. I know we needed it. I’ll go back to work as soon as I can. Molly says she’ll look after the baby for a few hours a day so I can do part time anyway.’

‘We don’t need money that bad, and if things go right for me you won’t have to work at all.’ Jack kissed me. ‘Once I’ve got a bit more behind me, I’ll be able to keep you in style.’

Jack was always talking about how things would be wonderful one day, but I wasn’t sure if I believed him. It was hard for people like us to better ourselves. ‘You don’t mind me taking the cooking course, do you?’

‘Not if it is what you want. I like good food so it won’t be wasted.’

‘I should like to work in a teashop but with my own cakes, not the sort of stuff the bakery sells. Do you remember that posh shop up West, near where we went to the pictures?’

‘Yeah, real fancy stuff. No call for that round here. People couldn’t afford it.’

‘Not at the prices they charge up West,’ I agreed. ‘But you can make things nice without charging the earth, Jack.’

His gaze intensified. ‘So you want to own a teashop, do you? Well, we shall have to see,’ he teased. ‘Maybe when I’ve got me own van you can have your shop.’

‘Oh Jack! You’ll never have one of them furniture vans. They must cost so much money.’

‘I reckon I shall need at least a hundred, maybe two to set up on me own. I’ll want a van and a store to put the stuff in, and then I need money to buy things. You can’t always sell everything straight away.’

‘Two hundred pounds?’ I stared at him in disbelief.
