Jack was angry when I told him about Katie and losing my job and then he frowned.
âAfter the way youâve slaved for him! Heâs got a damned cheek if you ask me. Do you want me to go round there and give him one?â
âNo, of course I donât, Jack! Please promise me you wonât go near him. Ann was upset over Katie. I canât blame her. Perhaps I shouldnât have taken the medicine for her after Mr Hopkins told me it had changed. In a way it is my fault that Katie is ill.â
âDonât be daft! If anyone is responsible it is the person who made that stuff up, or Ann for giving it to her baby. From what you told me she gave Katie far too much all the way through just to keep her quiet.â
âI did think she gave Katie too much. I told both her and Bill at the start that they needed to be carefulâand I did warn her that the new stuff was stronger.â
âIf she had anything about her, she would admit it,â Jack said. âItâs just as well youâve left there, Maggie love. I didnât like you walking home alone at night and I couldnât always be there to fetch you.â
âIâm sorry about the money, Jack. I know we needed it. Iâll go back to work as soon as I can. Molly says sheâll look after the baby for a few hours a day so I can do part time anyway.â
âWe donât need money that bad, and if things go right for me you wonât have to work at all.â Jack kissed me. âOnce Iâve got a bit more behind me, Iâll be able to keep you in style.â
Jack was always talking about how things would be wonderful one day, but I wasnât sure if I believed him. It was hard for people like us to better ourselves. âYou donât mind me taking the cooking course, do you?â
âNot if it is what you want. I like good food so it wonât be wasted.â
âI should like to work in a teashop but with my own cakes, not the sort of stuff the bakery sells. Do you remember that posh shop up West, near where we went to the pictures?â
âYeah, real fancy stuff. No call for that round here. People couldnât afford it.â
âNot at the prices they charge up West,â I agreed. âBut you can make things nice without charging the earth, Jack.â
His gaze intensified. âSo you want to own a teashop, do you? Well, we shall have to see,â he teased. âMaybe when Iâve got me own van you can have your shop.â
âOh Jack! Youâll never have one of them furniture vans. They must cost so much money.â
âI reckon I shall need at least a hundred, maybe two to set up on me own. Iâll want a van and a store to put the stuff in, and then I need money to buy things. You canât always sell everything straight away.â
âTwo hundred pounds?â I stared at him in disbelief.
