Lucy ran her fingers lightly across the pages. Could this be for real? As a child, she had read this book perhaps a hundred times, delighting again and again in the adventures that began at the infamous lamppost for the four Pevensie children. She’d mentioned this to Cam the night he’d accompanied her to the hospital, where she’d spied a child reading a copy of the book. But what did Cam mean by the note? What lamppost could he be talking about? There were thousands in the city of Los Angeles, thousands surrounding her home in Malibu alone.

Her heart caught in her throat. Not even caring that she was spilling coffee all over her prized comforter, Lucy struggled to free herself from her bedclothes, untangling one knotted-up foot at a time, and scurried to her bedroom window.

As she looked down to the street below, Lucy hardly dared to take a breath. It was only seconds, though, before she saw him. Standing casually with his back indeed to a lamppost on her street, Cam waited patiently. And from the determined look on his face, it appeared that he was prepared to wait all day.

“I think it’s time for you to talk to him.” Daphne’s words echoed in Lucy’s heart like a blessing.

Or a curse.

With that twisted benediction echoing in her mind, Lucy sprang into action. Grabbing a gray, zip-up sweatshirt, faded blue jeans, and canvas sneakers to throw on between her room and the front door, she prepared to do what she had been dreading all night, all morning—perhaps her entire life.

Like it or not, Daphne was right.

It was time to face the music.
