I’d been on edge since the minute I got the call. After hanging up, I made my way through the gated property in search of Rome to relay the information that Giovanni had been killed when transported from one prison to another. We agreed that neither of us would say anything to Chief until after the wedding. Gianna’s mother, father, and stepmother were already on the property, and I was hoping that word didn’t get to them until they returned to the States. I was glad he’d been taken care of, especially after what he did to my niece, but I didn’t want anything getting in the way of Chief’s big day.

When I showed up to the rehearsal dinner without Skai by my side, I thought I’d never hear the end of it. The entire time, my brothers and their girls had been pushing me to admit I had feelings for her while their girls kept asking if we were together and teasing me about a relationship that didn’t even exist. After dinner, I snagged Skai a piece of cake and headed back to her room to check on her like I said I would.

She answered the door wearing a two-piece loungewear set and some plush UGG slippers. “Hey.”

“What’s up? Thought you might be a lil’ hungry.”

“That depends.”

“On?”

“What’d you bring me?” she inquired. The corners of her mouth lifted in a smile.

“Open the box and find out.”

She opened it, and I watched her eyes flash with happiness. “Oh my God, cake! You brought me cake and a fork!”

“That’s what you asked for, so yeah.”

“Thank you! How was the rehearsal dinner and everything?”

“It was cool, but to be honest, them niggas were getting on my nerves.”

“Why? What happened?” she asked, mid-bite.

“Everybody wouldn’t stop talking about your ass!”

She broke into a short laugh. “Me? What about me?”

“Everything about you! Skai is so pretty. Is Skai your girl? Why’d you bring her if she’s not your girl? Where is she at? Did you make her mad? We set an extra place for her!” I mimicked all the backlash I’d received.

“Oh my God! All that?”

“Yeah, you must’ve made a crazy ass impression on them on the plane ride.”

“I like them all. They are so funny and laid back.”

“What you doin’ in here anyway?” I asked, leaning against the wall near her doorframe with one shoulder.

“Absolutely nothing.”

“And how’s that treating you?” I inquired.

“Quite well. I’ve been trying to fall asleep for forty-five minutes, but no luck.”

“You want me to kick it with you until you fall asleep?”

“You asking me to hang out?”

“You got a problem with that?”

“Nope. Come in.”

I walked into her room and pulled off my tie and button-up to get more comfortable before crashing down beside her on the bed. She’d placed a pillow between us, so I already knew what was up. “So, what’s up? What you in here watching?”

“The TV has just been on. I told you I’ve been watching the inside of my eyelids, trying to fall asleep. Can you just talk to me until I knock out?” she suggested while rubbing her eyes sleepily.
