In the afternoon we do wisdom book lessons around the dining room table.

We always review the entire passage we’ve learned from the beginning and then add the new verses. The day we completed memorizing Matthew 18, we repeated the whole thing, plus the last few verses up to verse 32! What a wonderful feeling of accomplishment that was for all of us.

We talk about each verse as we’re memorizing it, and I explain what it means. Some of the younger ones might not understand what the concepts are behind the words we’re memorizing, but gradually, as we review our memorized texts and discuss them, it begins to make sense and sink in.

We occasionally quote together the passages we have memorized to keep them current in our hearts and minds. Also, we encourage our children to quote the scripture they have memorized and think about each verse as they are falling asleep at night. We’ve learned that by meditating on God’s Word this way and by thinking pure thoughts, we shift our focus off the busyness of that day and prepare for the next one.
