Chapter Eight

All through church, my mind was on Jack’s impending work trip. The sermon passed me by and honestly, I don’t recall a word that Pastor Johnson said. It’s too bad because I could use the word—anything to right the wrong going on in my head.

Now that we’re home and I know he’s leaving soon, the knot in my stomach tugs and I can feel the sting of tears. Staring into Jack’s packed suitcase, I frown. Closing my eyes, I draw in a long breath in an attempt to calm myself. It helps but not by much.

I hate that Fiona is constantly on my mind, and I’m disappointed in myself for letting her get to me. It’s probably exactly what she wants.

As I stuff an envelope with a sweet love note into the side pocket of Jack’s briefcase, I smile because it feels like even though he’s going to be out of town with her that the gesture will pull his mind back to me, to home. It’s important that he knows how much I love him and will miss him.

That in mind, I write one more and stuff it in between his folded underwear.

When I enter the kitchen, I find Jack focusing on his phone, texting, looking all business and so handsome. I sigh because I’m truly going to miss him.

“So, how did things go for you last night? Are you more comfortable with Dante?” I say as I grab a mug of coffee.

He looks up and grins. “Yeah, I missed hanging with him. We had a good talk; he seems sorry for the wedding. He also seems more chill, more…mature. It might take time for me to totally forget what went down, but I’m basically over it.”

“That’s great! I know how close you guys were before...Well, anyway, this is a good thing. I’m so happy you have your bestie back.”

Gazing off to the side, he nods as if contemplating it. “Yeah,” he says. “Dante’s a good guy. He’s just impulsive and sometimes stupid for such a brilliant surgeon.”

Placing his phone on the table, he grins—God, I love that smile—it’s the kind that forces one to reciprocate.

“What are your plans for today?” he asks, grabbing his plate to clear the table.

“I’m going to walk Chia and call my mom and Bridgette. I’ve been missing them.”

“Say hi to your mom and sister from me. What else do you have planned?”

“Mel and I are going shopping. We’ll probably have a girls’ night.” I don’t tell him that Mel is basically hanging with me to help keep my mind occupied.

He laughs, shaking his head. “Didn’t you just have a girls’ night?”

“Well, yeah, but you can never have too many, really, and besides, we need to talk about the wedding. I’m hoping they set the date soon.”

The doorbell chimes and we exchange a questioning glance before going to answer the door. If that’s Fiona, she’s almost an hour early. I see her big-breasted silhouette through the smoked glass door, and my face flushes with anger.
