A “shoupade” today, part of Johnston’s River Line. Brig. Gen. Francis A. Shoup included 36 of his earth-and-log forts in the line he had built within two miles of the Chattahoochee. Remnants of just a few of them exist in suburban south Cobb County. (dd)

A month before, Capt. Sidney Champion of the 18th Mississippi had written his wife, “our beloved Genl Johnston has the confidence of almost every soldier … based upon skills as strategist.” Now those “skills” had brought Johnston’s army to within 10 miles of Atlanta, with a formidable enemy before it and a deep river behind it.

The commanding general still could not figure out what to do. On the evening of July 7, Johnston held a conference of corps commanders, including Peter Stewart, recently promoted to lieutenant general, who that day took command of Polk’s/Loring’s corps (Loring returned to his division). The meeting ended without consensus. Johnston would wait to see what Sherman did next.

He did not have to wait long.
