Lizzy expected him to immediately bring up the subject again as soon as they were alone, but he failed to do so after the dress rehearsal, which filled her with disappointment. Later that evening, after she left the school building to walk across the road to the boarding house where she lived, she was intercepted by a street boy with a bouquet of roses.

They must have been grown in a hothouse to survive this time of year, and they were exquisite. She already knew from whom the card would be when the boy handed it to her, tipped his hat, and ran off. She clasped them to her chest as she fumbled for the card while walking the distance to her room. She waited until she was inside and closed the door, wanting to savor the words in privacy so no one would see her reaction.

She opened the card, hands trembling, and gasped as she read the words.

Their beauty is no match for yours, and though they will fade in the next few days, my love remains eternal.

She blinked back tears as emotions overwhelmed her. Could it be there was a second chance for them? Had things changed enough between both of them and had they both changed enough to allow the love she had spurned and he had reluctantly given before to take new roots and rise into something sustainable and healthy, something that could last a lifetime?
