Patterns for Sanquhar Gloves

One publisher of these patterns for garments inspired by traditional or folk or ethnic knitting was the UK firm of Patons & Baldwins. Part of a series of leaflets that included knits from Shetland and Latvia, their pattern for Sanquhar gloves was published in 1954. Entitled Sanquhar Gloves, A Traditional Scottish Style on the cover of the leaflet, inside the heading reads ‘Sanquhar in Dumfriesshire gives its name to these traditional gloves’.

A women’s magazine, The People's Friend, published in the Scottish town of Dundee, presented two special knitting supplements in the mid-1950s, for Scottish knitting and Sanquhar knitting. Both these booklets gave patterns for Sanquhar knitwear in the form of glove and scarf sets, the second one adding a woman’s twinset, a child’s cap and boys’ knee-length socks specifically in the Sanquhar pattern. These publications and patterns, especially those given in widely read women’s magazines, helped to ensure that the knowledge of Sanquhar knitting was disseminated.
