What Is Communism?

Communism is a type of government in which the state owns everything; there is no such thing as personal property. People who live under Communist rule are usually not allowed to speak out against or disagree with the government. The government makes all decisions in the lives of its people—from where they can live, work, and worship to what they can read, discuss—even what they can buy. The theory is that everyone should be treated in exactly the same way and that the government knows what is best for the people.

After World War II, two world superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, became fierce enemies. The Soviet Union promoted and supported countries that embraced (or wanted to participate in) Communism, while the United States promoted and supported countries that were anti-Communist. For almost 50 years, relations between the two countries were very tense and hostile. Although the United States and the Soviet Union never actually went to war, the possibility of an enormous battle was always present. This period of unease and conflict is known as the cold war. It finally ended in 1991, when the Soviet Union collapsed.
