The entire wagon train knew that Harris had saved Katie from Mort Sneed, but only those closest to Harris’ wagon knew he and Jake slept under the wagon while Katie slept inside.

Sneed had no idea Harris slept under the wagon, and he planned to frighten them both. Perhaps Katie would see that Harris couldn’t protect her. He’d step forward and offer her a choice. He’d make Katie his no matter what. She was part of a deal, and he’d been cheated.

Sneed checked the flour sack one more time. He could see the snake moving around madly inside. It was angry at being contained. It was a simple, harmless grass snake, but in a dark wagon at night, it wouldn’t matter. They wouldn’t know it was harmless, and Sneed laughed as he thought of the screams and fear that Katie and Harris would experience.

Sleep eluded Harris as he lay there listening to Jake sleep the sleep of the innocent. He wished he could turn off his problems as easily, but he worried about the rest of the trip. He’d overheard Walt tell Cookie he was worried about this trip since they already had more problems than expected. Would it get worse? Today’s incident with the tumbleweed wagon wasn’t a normal occurrence. No one could have expected it. What else could go wrong that no one expected?

Sneed chuckled to himself as he picked up the wriggly flour sack and moved away from the back of his wagon.

Sneed crept quietly across the dark stretch of grass between his wagon and Harris’. There was enough moonlight that Sneed knew which wagon belonged to Katie and Harris.

Harris heard a sound he didn’t expect late at night and saw a pair of legs approaching his wagon. He rolled out from under the wagon, grabbing his gun before he stood and crept toward the back of the wagon. When he looked around the edge of the wagon, he saw Sneed trying to open the closed canvas on the back of the wagon.

Harris lifted his gun and said, “What do you think you’re doing? What’s in the sack? Don’t move, or I’ll shoot you where you stand.”

Sneed stammered, “Nothing! I wasn’t doing nothing. I’m just taking a walk. I found a grass snake. That’s all.”

Harris motioned with the gun. “C’mon, let's take a walk together to Walt’s wagon. I’m sure he’ll be as interested about what’s in that sack as I am.”

As they approached Walt’s wagon, Harris called out, “Walt! Walt, wake up! We have a problem.”

A sleepy Walt pushed his head out of the back of the wagon and asked, “What’s going on?”

“More trouble,” Harris said. “I caught Sneed at the back of my wagon trying to empty the sack he’s carrying into my wagon.”

Walt stepped down, and Sneed insisted he was just walking and carrying the harmless snake he’d found.

“Harmless? This sounds like a small boy’s prank on his sister or teacher. You’re a grown man. Harmless, you say? Let’s see how harmless you think it is,” Walt said as he grabbed the sack and pulled it over Sneed’s head.
