Chapter Five

The previous day Selma had come down the stairs at Mortlyn having treated Oliver’s leg.

Needless to say he had been doing too much and she had to read him a strict lecture on being more careful.

“It is so boring here,” Oliver complained. “If I was with you and Uncle Wade, it would be different.”

“With the best will in the world,” Selma laughed, “I don’t think we could squeeze any more people into The Dovecote.”

It was not a large house and besides Nanny, there were Daws, Emily, Mr. Hunter’s son and a footman all sleeping in the house.

The chef, Amy and the footmen, who relieved each other both by night and day, arrived every morning and left late in the evening,

It made Selma laugh, when she had thought that she and Nanny were going to be alone there, to realise that the small house was as busy as a beehive.

But she understood what Oliver meant and she answered,

“If you will just be patient for a little while, then you will be able to do everything you want.”

She carried on in a serious tone,

“The new skin that is growing on your leg is very very delicate and, if you make it sore and uncomfortable, you will have only yourself to blame.”

“Skin or no skin,” Oliver said crossly, “I intend to go riding tomorrow.”

“Very well,” Selma agreed, “but please keep your leg up today and rest as much as you can, I cannot have two invalids on my hands all at once.”

“Two?” Oliver questioned. “Is Uncle Wade bad again?”

“He was impatient like you,” Selma replied, “He has not only got out of bed, which he was not supposed to do, but walked about until he brought on one of his blinding headaches.”

“I thought that you were supposed to prevent this from happening,” Oliver teased.

“I gave him chrysanthemum leaves,” she answered, “and this morning he is well again, but very disagreeable.”

“I had better come over and protect you from His Grace’s rage,” Oliver suggested.

“Tomorrow,” Selma said firmly, “and you are to now take it easy and try to sleep after luncheon.”

“You are a bully that is what you are!” Oliver protested.

Selma only laughed at him.

She realised, however, that it was a mistake to allow him to feel so depressed.

She thought that she would suggest to the Duke that one or two people of Oliver’s age should be invited to luncheon or dinner at Mortlyn.

It would amuse him to play the host and she was sure that the Duke would agree.

As she reached the hall, she was thinking how kind he was about so many things and how much she loved him.

Then she was aware that Groves was opening the front door and that someone had just arrived in a carriage.

She moved away to stand underneath the staircase thinking that it would be a mistake if strangers were calling and for them to see her.

Then she heard Groves saying,

“Good day, Captain Seymour, it is good to see you again.”

“I have come,” the newcomer answered, “to find out what has happened to His Grace.
