Chapter Fifteen

Those feelings of acceptance and appreciation carried David through the week. He worked industriously at the mercantile, cheerfully waited on customers, and efficiently delivered the orders, opened crates, and put away arriving stock. And all week he looked forward to Friday, when he would drive to Winston for Josie.

Jost had promised to have the buggy ready and waiting for David on Friday afternoon. When three o’clock rolled around, all David had to do was wait for Teddy to trot from the schoolhouse to the mercantile, and the two of them would walk to the livery.

Mr. Jost offered a friendly howdy, but David didn’t waste time on chitchat. He gave Teddy a boost into the front seat, then climbed in beside him and headed for Winston.

Although well into September, the day held a summer-like feel. Trees were green and full, a cheerful playground for chattering squirrels and raucous blue jays. A grainy scent from cut wheat filled the air, and the marigolds continued to bloom on each side of the road. Teddy’s head was lifted to the sky. David flicked a glance upward and caught sight of a circling hawk high up, no doubt looking for his supper.

The horse’s hooves landed briskly against the dirt road, sending up tiny puffs of dust. Each clip-clop brought him closer to Winston. Closer to Josie. A perfect day.

David drove directly to the school building rather than the boardinghouse. Josie had told him she’d stay there and correct papers until he arrived, then they would go together to the boardinghouse to collect her bag for the weekend. He pulled up in front of the tall, square brick building and set the brake. Just as he hopped down, Josie emerged from the building and ran down the wide concrete steps.

“David, you’re here!” She nearly knocked him off balance with her welcoming hug. Then she whirled on Teddy, capturing him a in hug that lifted him from the ground. “Hey, little brother! It looks like you grew!”

Teddy wriggled loose and gave his sister an impish grin. “Did you make the kids mind?”

She laughed. “You bet I did.”

“You must have had a good week. You sure sound—and look—happy,” David commented.

“Oh, I had a wonderful week, David! I can’t wait to tell you about it, but first I need to collect my things from my desk, and I’d like you to meet the other teachers—oh! and come in and see my classroom. I’ve already had the children hang some of their pictures on the walls to cheer up the room. Come on!” She caught Teddy’s hand and David’s arm, tugging them both toward the school building.

Josie was bubbling with excitement as she pointed out the cloakroom, her classroom, and the others in the building. The three teachers were still in their rooms, so she introduced them in turn—Miss English, a bookish-looking woman who appeared to be somewhere in her forties and taught the fourth through sixth grades, Mr. Tompkins, the seventh- through ninth-grade teacher who sported a thick beard that compensated for his thinning scalp, and Mr.
