One of the easiest ways to do this is to purchase a royalty-free photo license that fits the tone of your subject matter. From there, use typesetting to put your text over the image. Keep it clean and simple, and use fonts that look like the types of fonts that are being used by the big guys. It is also helpful to do some research on movie posters and emulate the styles of font that work best for your film. Be sure not to get too attached to this early poster art, as it will surely change as you go into production and start working with a distributor. This should serve only as an early step toward showing people the direction and tone of your movie.
Look books: Look books are basically PowerPoint documents that highlight a brief outline of your story as well as location ideas, particular actor looks, and other creative things that inspire you. Think of this as your multipage vision board, where you can show your team and partners the desired lighting, camera angles, and acting directions in which you wish to go.
