He eased her away from him slowly, even as the urgency of his own release threatened the fly of his trousers. He’d send her back to bed and then take care of himself. There was nothing else to be done. He couldn’t…he couldn’t…he swallowed away the taste of despair.

“Gwendolyn.” His voice sounded scratchy, and he swallowed again. “Gwendolyn, you must return to your room now.”

She had been steady beneath his palms, but at his words, she swayed, turning to face him, confusion and, hell, hurt on her features.

“My…room? But…” Her eyes fell to his trousers, and he wondered just how much she knew about the love act.

He turned away before she could see the truth of his desire, pacing to the other side of the room until a smattering of discarded chairs stood between them. “Go to bed, Gwendolyn. You must be tired.” He kept his back to her as he sucked in a steadying breath, blowing it out slowly between his lips as he willed himself to calm.

He wrapped the cloth around his fists several times, determined to hold on to the last remnants of his defense.

“Don’t you dare hide from me,” she said. Her hair tangled about her shoulders, a reminder of what they had done, of the way he had pressed her against the wall, her body arching into his—

With a slap of her hand, the dust cloth was gone, and he tumbled backward in surprise, landing in a chair behind him. She was on him in an instant, the skirts of her nightrail snatched up into one hand as she launched herself atop him, straddling him as her free hand braced herself against the back of the chair.
