Greyson shook his head, chastising himself for asking such a thing. But he knew why he had done so. Because Mr. Bagshaw, for all his uppity ideals, would suit Hailey better than he. They were from the same county, their properties were of similar size, and they had the same social sphere.

If she were to marry such a man, she would slip easily into the role of wife and eventually mother in this county and become one of influence and status in Grafton.

If he were to marry her, she would have the beau monde watching her every move, just waiting for her country manners to make a fool of herself in some way and laugh at her until another caught their attention.

A future duchess or not, that would not save her from gossip and sly remarks at her grand match and elevation in society. Nor would his father be kind and welcoming to the family. He would dismiss her as he dismissed anyone who was not titled and rich. He did not want her to be the butt of cruel jokes and nasty comments.

He would hate to lead her into a ball and have anyone be mean to her, for he would then have to retaliate and bloody some noses. And he could not bloody a woman's nose, no matter what she said or did.

Yet, he did not push her away, tell her to return to the house and look elsewhere for a husband. He could no sooner hold back the flow of the Thames River than he could hold back what Hailey made him feel.

Alive for the first time in his life. Worthy and cherished by someone genuine. She was an elixir he could not stop wanting.

"I do not want you to marry Martin Bagshaw," he admitted, tipping up her face to his. He took her lips, losing himself for a moment in her. "I do not know how I shall bear seeing you go to London to find a husband. I know I should not want you for myself, but I do. I want us to stay here, locked away in the wilds of Northamptonshire where we never have to part."

She sighed, hugging him. Greyson started at the honest affection. He'd never been hugged before, and he liked the sensation of being in another's arms. A person who wished for no more from you than what she knew him to be.

Hailey did not know that he was a marquess and future duke. She did not know that he would inherit one of the most wealthy titles in England and one of the oldest. She knew nothing about him, yet she sat with him and risked her reputation to be alone with him.

A lowly farmhand with nothing to offer her but his love and affection.

She humbled him.

His heart tumbled, and he knew he was in trouble. His mind often warned him to take care, not tumble for any lady with a pretty face and handsome gown, but it was too late.
