“I received word that you had information for me,” Hawk said as he entered the Duke of Leicester’s residence.

Leicester gave a nod to his secretary, Mr. Franklin, to leave them. “Yes, and Persephone was right to fear the Comte.”

Hawk sat down in the chair opposite his friend. “Rockhurst has already discovered some disturbing things about the man. He is a degenerate.”

“I found out a good deal more through my sources. He is here in England to find a bride and by all accounts he has set his sights on Persephone. He has even reached out to members of the ton to ask about her father. It seems he is ready to seek his permission to marry her.”

Hawk shook his head in disgust. “He will never have her. Have you discovered anything else of importance?”

Leicester gave him a grave look. “Yes, and you aren’t going to like it. Many of the women that Comte Domingo encounters somehow suffer mysterious disappearances or death.”

Hawk’s frowned deepened. “He is a murderer?”

Leicester leaned back further. “No evidence has ever linked him to the disappearances or the untimely deaths of the young ladies, but our friends in the foreign office are watching him closely. He has also been married before. His young wife is said to have killed herself.”

Hawk stood from his seat and began pacing the room. “From what Rockhurst has told me, I imagine she thought it a better alternative than being married to the bastard.” He stopped pacing and turned back to face his friend. “I will need to add extra security around the house. I will not take any chances with either Persephone or Catherine’s safety.”

Leicester nodded in agreement. “I think that is a wise decision.”

Hawk resumed his pacing.

“Is there something else troubling you, Hawk?”

He shook his head. “I am thinking it might be time to move the family to the country. They would be safer at Hawk’s Hill than here in London”

“Before the end of the season? I don’t know about Persephone, but you will have to drag Catherine away. She will not want to leave all the enticements the season offers.”

Hawk knew it would be difficult to convince Catherine to leave London but if Persephone’s life was in danger, she wouldn’t have much of a choice. “I know, but it is necessary. I will make the arrangements and hopefully be ready to go by the end of the week.”

“I am here if you need any assistance.”

Hawk nodded toward him. “Thank you, Michael, I will let you know. If you see Rockhurst, make him aware of my plans.”

Bond Street

Catherine and Persephone were once again at the modiste with Aunt Louisa having their final fittings for their gowns for the Carrington’s ball.

Persephone was a little worried that she was spending too much money on the season. She knew her father set aside some money for her every year and Aunt Louisa’s solicitors handled it for her. But she knew it could not be much and she was worried that her expenses were becoming more than she could afford.
