CHAPTER NINETEEN

The sun was beginning its glorious descent in the sky by the time Jallon collected her arrows and refused to give them back to her for another round. Ariah stretched out her arms in the car. They felt pleasantly sore from the necessary effort of drawing her borrowed bow over and over, along with the exertion from her night with Darien. She sank into the seat and smiled.

“That was rejuvenating. I needed it, although I wish I had my own bow to work with,” Ariah said. Jallon reached over and squeezed her knee.

“We’ll get you a new one. I was beginning to wonder whether your head was in the game. After the first two rounds of missed marks, I contemplated standing behind you in case the arrow slipped,” he teased. Ariah punched his solid arm and rolled her eyes. He smirked. “I know your thoughts were elsewhere, but you got back into it and struck me dumb with your impeccable talent, borrowed bow or not.”

“Striking you dumb isn’t hard, sorry to say.”

“It’s a lot harder than you think. I merely like to satisfy you without making you put in much effort.”

Once they reached the confines of the Sanctuary, Ariah’s contentment fizzled. Her enjoyment of a day of freedom from the tension and lingering disquiet dimmed as she approached her front door. Leave his car running in the drive, Jallon followed her up and pulled her into a bear hug.

“Go in and rest up. I’m sure you’ll be having a busy night. If you need anything, holler.”

“It’s quite disconcerting when you refer to me and an intimate evening in the same sentence.” Ariah kissed his cheek and opened her door.

“Give it up, Ariah. I’m happy for you two. I haven’t seen you look so content in years.”

“It’s been a while since I’ve been this happy.”

“Exactly, doll. Embrace it and I’ll talk to you later.”

Ariah waited until Jallon dropped into his car and sped down the road before she closed the door. Almost immediately, the buttery smell of popcorn hit her. As she climbed the stairs to the living room, she found Keri sitting on her sofa, chowing down and watching some chick flick.

Her friend swiveled and gave Ariah a smile filled with popcorn. Ariah laughed as she pulled the elastic from her hair.

“My flat screen isn’t working. I tried calling Jallon to fix it, but Casey said he was with you, and that big oaf was too busy getting ready to head into the Otherworld to bother giving a girl a hand. I figured I’d come here and make myself at home until you arrived.” Keri held up the oversized bowl in her lap. “Popcorn?”

“Let me shower and I’ll join you.” Ariah tugged off her shirt and wiped sticky perspiration from her face. “Did you eat? Wanna order a pizza? The guard was back on when Jallon and I pulled through.”

“Cool. Half pepperoni?”

“ ’Course.”

Ariah cleaned the grime and sweat from her afternoon excursion off her body and dressed in a fresh set of clothes.
