There were fewer people around the campground when she woke the next morning. Some of her peers must have already entered their houses and started their trials.
She made her way from the tent over to her house. The golden door was about the size of the entrance to the palace back home, though this structure was substantially smaller. It made the entryway seem more imposing.
The voice of her father ran through her mind, promising that he would be with her through her trials. She took a deep breath. âI can do this,â Kaia said to herself as she stepped forward toward the house. Her hands were warm and sweaty, and they trembled as she opened the door.
Dust flew out of the house as the door swung open, revealing a long, dark hallway with a wooden floor. Kaia did a double take: the inside of the house looked much longer than it did on the exterior. She walked over to the side of the house, then back to the doorframe and peered inside again. It was definitely bigger on the inside.
On each side of the long hallway were three doors, all with unique designs. Between each door was a candle mounted on the wall, casting dim light. The floor squeaked as she took a few tentative steps inside, the lights casting tall shadows from her body against the wall.
The house was warm and smelled like an old library. From the outside, it looked as if it was a two-story house, but the inside was one level. The doors lining the hallway were a decent distance apart from each other, and no two doors were alike.
There was a loud thud behind Kaia, which caused her to swear and jump with fear. She spun on her heels toward the sound and realized the door to the outside of the house had slammed shut behind her. She tried to pry it open, twisting and yanking at the knob, but it would not budge.
This was it. Eloaah would not let her leave. This house would be her home until victory or death.
She strode to the first door on her right, a marble door with golden accents and a golden doorknob. Its design reminded her of elven architecture. She tried to open the door, but it didnât move.
With a sigh, she looked at the other doors. A faint sound came from behind one of them. The sound reminded her of turbulent ocean waves, and the door looked familiar. It was made of oak and had two large metal locks bolted onto it, just like the doors to the fishing boats back home.
Kaia ran her fingers over a symbol etched into the wood before pressing an ear against the door and trying to place the sound. It sounded like waves during a storm. She reached for the doorknob and twisted it, and a heavy wave of murky water pushed the door open. The waves crashed into the house, flooding the hallway in seconds and causing Kaia to fall on her back.
