MAX ARRIVED IN under five minutes, driving a very plain black truck with heavily tinted windows, and he didn’t ask Coop any specific questions until they were driving along the main street of town. “Max, do you have any contact with Jimmer Stucky?”

“Not a lot, but I see him around town, and a few months ago, Dad bought a picnic table from him. It’s real nice. He’s handy with wood.”

“Could you call him for me?”

Max made a turn Cooper didn’t expect. He pulled the truck off the main street and into the parking lot behind the sheriff’s substation. He stopped and turned to Coop. “What’s going on?”

“I don’t want anyone, especially Danny’s kid, to know I’m around town. I’ve only got a handful of days before I’m leaving again, and I need to get something for the old house.”

“Man, I thought you were in some kind of trouble, sneaking around town. What do you want from Jimmer?”

He’d come to a decision while he’d trailed Boone and McKenna through the porch and into the house. They’d passed an old glider, and he’d remembered McKenna’s suggestion that a glider would be great on the porch with pillows.

“Quick version. I want to get a glider to put up at Grandpa’s house and need to know if Jimmer makes gliders and if he has any available right now. If he only does custom, it won’t work. I want it here and set up by the time I have to head back on the circuit.”

“Lillian should have Jimmer’s number.”

He put a call in over the radio, and his dispatcher answered. “Lil, I need a number for Jimmer Stucky.” He grinned. “No, he’s doing good—not in any trouble as far as I know. I just need to ask him something.” He listened, then said, “Send it to my cell phone.”

The number came to Max’s cell in under a minute. “Dang, that woman’s good.”

He put in a call to Jimmer. “Hey, Jimmer, it’s Max Donovan—” He cut off, then said, “No, nothing like that, unless you want to confess to something.” Coop heard the laughter on the other end of the line. “I just want to find out about your new business, the outdoor furniture you’re making.”

Max put the call on speaker so Coop could listen. It went well, and Jimmer had three gliders ready to go. He had a dark wood glider with horse heads carved into the armrests, but it was a glider on chains that you attached to the ceiling or framework like a swing. The other two were more plain. Jimmer offered same-day delivery, including setup. He’d add free cushions with any purchase.

Max hit the mute button. “Which one?”

“The horse head with chains and tell him I need really nice red seat cushions.”

Max tied up the deal for delivery to the ranch in one hour, and he made it in cash. Then he drove Coop up to the old ranch. When Jimmer showed up, Coop stayed inside until the delivery was complete and the payment made.
