She shouldn’t have hugged him like that. Abigail chided herself for the momentary lapse in judgment that had made her hug Isaac. Sure, it was normal for her to hug people, especially during a moment of pride or happiness.

But this was different. Hugging Isaac was different.

Even though they’d been working out in the hot sun with kids all day, she had breathed in his scent greedily, wanting as much as she could take in. By the time Isaac pulled away, Abigail had realized that this wasn’t a friend hug, at least not for her.

Had he realized it? Had he sensed her more than friendly feelings toward him? It had been easy to ignore the crush she’d had on him when she thought he was a jerk. She’d been able to pretend that she felt nothing for him because she hadn’t seen him in such an admirable light. But when you saw someone face an incredible fear and overcome it, you couldn’t look at them the same way anymore.

She certainly didn’t see Isaac unfavorably. It was hard to even imagine why she disliked him in the first place. Yes, she hated his tough-guy attitude. But now she saw the vulnerability underneath. After the night when they talked about forgiveness and faith, Abigail felt a new closeness to him, and she understood him on a deeper level.

How could he understand things like forgiveness and love when he’d never experienced it? It was true that Maddie had hurt them all, but if it hadn’t been for Maddie’s lies, they wouldn’t have Kayla in their lives, and Kayla was one of the brightest spots in their family. Her smile, her laughter, all the joy she brought to them—all that would have been lost. Lives had been touched through Kayla, and Abigail had to believe that as with Joseph in the Bible, whose brothers had meant him harm, God had planned all of those bad things for the good, the saving of many lives. Just like Joseph had forgiven his brothers, they too had to forgive Maddie.

Hopefully, the love they continued to share as a family would be an example to Isaac, and he would continue to grow in his faith.

Yes, that was it.

Rather than focusing on her personal feelings for Isaac, Abigail had to continue focusing on helping him and building him up, just as she did for everyone else.

Abigail focused on the more important task at hand, working with the children. As she supervised them putting away the last of the tack, she forced herself to put Isaac out of her mind. Her focus had to be on the children. Even though a secret part of her had always wished she could find a love of her own, the truth was she was so busy taking care of the kids in the stables that she didn’t have room for anything else in her life.

The few times she’d been interested in someone, the potential relationship had been too distracting, and her feelings weren’t strong enough for her to pursue it.
