Chapter Nine

Day Seven

Friday, December 18, 2020

“Good morning, Mrs. Smith. Do you have a few minutes? I need to talk to you about a problem between our girls?” My voice was thick with anxiety and worry, but I tried to stay focused. I hoped that talking to Karen’s parents would answer some of my questions.

“Of course. Is there something wrong?” Stephanie sounded nervous so I continued.

“Actually, yes. Sally told me last night about some things going on right now that I’m very concerned about. She didn’t want me to say anything to anyone, but she was quite upset. I’ve had all night to think about it, and I decided that as her mother, I simply couldn’t leave this alone.”

“What’s going on?” Stephanie asked.

“Well, apparently, Sally is being pressured by your daughter Karen to sneak out of the house tomorrow night to go to the movies with a couple of boys.”

“Oh really?” Surprise filled her voice.

“That’s what Karen told her, at least that’s what Sally told me.” I knew my words were jumbled but I hoped Stephanie could understand my meaning.

“Well, that is interesting since Karen is grounded.” She sounded frustrated.

“Oh. I didn’t know that” I said.

“Are you sure about what Sally told you? I don’t want to jump to conclusions, but kids tell stories to keep themselves out of trouble.” I didn’t like her meaning but I could understand why she jumped to her daughter’s defense.

“Actually, I am certain. I read the text messages on Sally’s phone this morning. I have it right here. It seems Sally was going along with the plan quite adamantly until last night when a text was sent from Karen, which I can read to you if you want. The message spooked Sally, so she decided to bring it to my attention.”

“I’m not entirely sure what you’re talking about, but I think I might need to get my hands on Karen’s phone.”

“To be honest, Stephanie, I’m pretty upset over Sally's role in this. But I have to agree with her. Karen is trying to push her to do things she isn’t ready to handle.”

“Wait, what am I missing here?”

“The text that Karen sent reads, and I’m going to quote exactly as it’s written here:

“T said E can’t wait to see you. He’s excited to lose his V.

I no u r 2. Supplies and Trojans already in the van!”
