Chapter 20

The words sliced through me. “Noooo! I knew she had lost a lot of blood, but I didn’t expect this. She was so young.” I sank against the back of the chair.

Eric signaled the waitress. “I think we’d like another coffee if that’s okay.”

“Sure.” She shot me a pitying look.

Was I pale? Probably.

After she brought the coffee, Eric said calmly, “Let’s go through this again. Exactly what happened?”

“Eric, I didn’t kill her!”

“I know you didn’t. But someone did. You saw blood, so something happened to her. Do you recall anyone passing by? Someone who ran or jogged by you after the argument?”

“It wasn’t really an argument. It was me begging her to leave me, us, alone. Are they saying I murdered her?”

“I don’t know. But it’s not a good sign that they want to talk with you.”

“I have a totally clear conscience. I don’t know what happened to her. I’m horrified and so sad that she died, but I had nothing to do with it.” I paid for the extra coffees and left a generous tip since we had tied up the table for so long.

“Thanks for breakfast, Florrie.”

“I’m going over to the police station right now. Who should I ask for?”

“Maybe you should take an attorney.”

I blinked at him. “Did you not hear me? I have nothing to hide.”

“You can be very stubborn. I’ll take you there. But I still think you should call a lawyer.”

“Thanks, Eric,” I muttered through my teeth. Didn’t he believe me?

He drove me to the police station. I had the feeling that my interview happened more quickly because Eric was involved. Or maybe they had just been waiting for me.

Sergeant Bridges took me into a small room and offered me water. For the third time I went through the details.

“If you need confirmation that she was following me, both Fish Gordon and Eric Jonquille saw her in the bookstore when I had to ask her to leave. And both of them helped remove her from the party when she pretended to be a photographer.”

Bridges made note of that. At least he was listening to me.

“But you didn’t press charges.”

“I thought she would stop. She practically ran out of the bookstore when she saw Eric and Fish. Seriously, if you were forcibly removed from a party, wouldn’t you just give up? Besides, what with Evan’s death, I didn’t even give Cara any more thought until today when she turned up again.”

“We have a witness who says he saw you with her just before she collapsed.”

I nodded. “The dry cleaner. When I was speaking with her, she seemed fine. I stalked away. I was in a hurry to get to breakfast with Eric. How do you know the dry cleaner didn’t kill her? I had my back to her. He could have darted out of his shop, stabbed her, and run back inside to dispose of the knife.”

“Is that what you think happened?”

I chose my words carefully and spoke slowly and clearly. “I walked away from her.
